Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

We have previously chosen not to request disclosure of AI use in submitted works. However, as enquiries about artificial intelligence become increasingly common, we have decided to introduce a question on our entry form to help us better understand how it is being used by independent authors and publishers.

The Rubery Book Award exists to champion independently and self-published authors and publishers. Unlike larger publishing houses, independent authors often have limited access to professional editors, illustrators and other publishing resources, leaving them to develop these skills themselves or find alternative ways of producing their books.

We recognise that AI can be a valuable tool in this process, whether assisting an author with dyslexia, helping with editing or translation, developing prose, or creating illustrations.

At present, we have no restrictions on the use of AI in submitted works, and disclosure does not affect a book’s eligibility. Our focus remains on the quality of the finished book, with all entries assessed on their individual merits.

Authors and publishers remain responsible for the content of their submitted works, including ensuring that they have the necessary rights to any text or images produced with the assistance of AI. We expect all entrants to respect copyright and intellectual property rights, regardless of the tools used in creating their books.

We will continue to review our position as the technology develops and update our guidance if our policy changes.
